My name is Steve and I am a nature lover. I am on a mission to turn my property into a place that showcases some of our local native plants and hopefully becomes a place some of our wildlife will call home.
Our place is a normal suburban 600sqm block in the middle of the Sunshine Coast QLD. It is pretty typical of most suburbs but we are lucky in that we have several wild areas still available not too far away. For the most part though it is very far removed from what it looked like over 200 years ago.
In 2019 after watching the Our Planet series, my eyes were opened to how I had been contributing to our planet suffering and in turn our suffering, that made me want to do more (or at least something). Deforestation became an interest of mine and I wanted to explore ways that everyday people could help without costing them time, too much effort and little or no money.
In 2021 I became a trainee with a Landcare group and completed a certificate in Conservation and Land Management. This full time, 6 month course really motivated me, gave me direction and purpose. Without trying to sound to corny it really feels like it ignited a fire in me to do all that I can to spread the word on saving our bushland. It introduced me to a whole new way to look at the forest. I had been hiking and trail running plenty of times but now I saw things in a whole new light. I began to understand the relationship of the forest and what is required for it to function. A forest is so much more than a bunch of trees and it has an energy that is unmatched if you take the time to absorb it.
Now I spend my time learning all I can on ways to create urban environments that can serve the planet and the wildlife. I Imagine a neighbourhood of backyards with native gardens that backed on to each other to create a green corridor. Where small birds were able to move about without fear of predators. Where kids were able to observe lizards and frogs in their own back yard rather than in tanks. Where the temperature of your house could be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter because it was protected by plants. You could be surrounded by the beauty of your native flowers in every colour all year round.
This is my journey to create my Natura Domi (Nature at Home).
